A feast of comedy plays in Beijing
The Beijing Comedy Festival has kicked off at the Beijing Comedy Theater recently with 12 excellent plays on offer, including Shakespeare’s classic works, clown dramas, and original Chinese productions.

Presented by Italy’s Teatro Stabile Torino

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of master playwright Shakespeare’s death, Teatro Stabile Torino, Italy’s well-known theater, brought the classic comedy, As You Like It, to China for the third time. It is a representative Shakespeare comedy and a prelude of his tragedies.

Mix 2 Times
French clown comedy
Date: Nov 5-6
The pantomime about clowns gave Chinese audiences a chance to experience French humor. It was presented by BP ZOOM, a company of just two actors inspired by the performance of comedy masters Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati. The play originates from the colorful imagination of worry-free children and depicts the reappearance of beautiful memories.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
A Shakespeare play produced by the National Centre for the Performing Arts
Date: Nov 9-13
The National Center for the Performing Arts produced this play to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. It is performed by the center’s actors and directed by Kris White of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Xitai (The Stage) by Dadao Culture
Date: Dec 1-3
It is a large original stage comedy, written by famous scriptwriter Yu Yue and directed by renowned comedian Chen Peisi who stars in it together with actor Yang Lixin.
When first unveiled on July 16, 2015 as the opening play of the Beijing Comedy Theater, it caused a sensation in the capital. More than 1,000 tickets sold out in a single day, a record. It won praise by industry insiders and general audiences, and was hailed as “another peak of modern stage comedies”.
