Newly developed products fusing science, technology and culture drew a lot of stares from the crowd at the 12th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF), May 12 - 16, with 26 enterprises from Beijing displaying their robots, smart pianos and stereoscopic notes.

One example of the innovative products on offer was Fabo, a home robot developed by the Beijing Evolver Robot Science and Technology Co that can tutor, sing and dance, project videos, clean the air and control household appliances through voice control. Then there was ONE, a smart piano produced by Xiaoyezi (Beijing) Science and Technology Co that allows beginners to learn how to play the piano with the guidance of teaching software.

And, finally, a series of stereoscopic notes, presented by the Beijing United Publishing Co, which use augmented reality and mobile clients to make traditional — and popular — science books stand out on mobile phones and tablets.

Compared with former events, this year’s ICIF focused more on quality and connotation, with participating enterprises producing commodities in film, television and performance, digital publishing, animation, games, and arts and crafts.

Added value output from Beijing’s cultural creative industry rose from 169.8 billion yuan ($25.89 billion) in 2010 to 307.2 billion yuan in 2015, during the 12th Five-year Plan (2011-15), an annual increase of 12.6 percent. This accounted for 13.4 percent of the city’s GDP, ranking first in China, according to Beijing News. The capital expects to provide larger space for its culture, science and technology industries in its next five-year plan and the industry’s added value is expected to make up 15 percent of the capital’s GDP by 2020.
